Michelle and Albert - such a well-written post on a multi-faceted issue. I really think we are stronger together, and if being Asian American can be intersectional towards a fight for equality and social justice for all, then I will be Asian-American in solidarity. In reading how Jay Kaspian Kang felt more affinity to children of Jewish and West African immigrants than from Chinese and Japanese in the U.S. really speaks to how diverse our community is. When I interviewed Cambodian refugee teens in Long Beach in the 2000s, many of them identified more with the teens of working class, immigrant Latino/a families than they did with 2nd generation Chinese Americans, their so-called fellow Asian Americans. Let us hope that we can use this difficult moment to rethink what being Asian American means and what it can do for all who seek anti-racist justice.
