Just came across your substack this morning and I am sat here, sobbing into my coffee. Your nainai sounds amazing. She would have been in between the ages of my father and my nainai who lived through similar time periods in China, Taiwan and the US. Many many thanks for sharing this story.

Michelle & Albert - thank you for sharing these stories and history of your beloved grandmother. What a fascinating life she led. I have been to China twice. I also had a an apple I could not bring in the US! Was not on purpose - it was just in my bag for a snack that didn't get eaten.

Really glad to have this window into Michelle's heart... What a profound recollection and tribute to your grandma! So complex to try to understand what experiences led to the formation of one's ancestors... And to hold onto and discover the meaning of one's life. I'm doing much the same as my grandma is 98 this year as well. I got to visit her a few months ago and hope to do so again soon. In the meantime, I've written up questions on 15 themes that I hope she will answer for me bit by bit... Much love to you, Michelle!

I think I cried the entire time I was reading this beautiful tribute to Michelle's nainai. Even at such a incredibly long life of almost 100 years, it's hard to let go of the people we love. All my thoughts to the both of you.
